This is a lovely piece, and your annual ritual of baking a cake for your late father the sweetest of tributes.

Domenica, this is such a kind comment. Thanks for reading me!

I'm always trying to convince myself that dad would be happy with those cakes (at least with the good ones 😂)

I'm a big fan of your work and your amazing newsletter! I'm so glad we're connected!

Big hugs!

This is such a beautiful tribute to him and to everyone who belongs here. Which is everyone. “He wasn’t cheap with his love” ❤️ neither are we. You are welcome here. In all your stunning talent and humanity.

You, my dear Sally, make me feel welcome in places I never imagined I’d belong, helping so many of my dreams take root and grow. I truly believe that only my dad could have chosen someone like you—absolutely not cheap with her love either—to watch over me now that he’s no longer here. ❤️

Your father sounds like a lovely man. Thank you for sharing. I also hope that you will keep the faith with America. Not all of us agree with the current administration on immigration. I am the daughter of two Brazilian immigrants and I believe in the promise of America for the huddled masses.

Leila, this is such a beautiful and kind comment--thank you so much! I still have so much faith in this country, and I'm sure we'll overcome this catastrophe that somehow we got ourselves in, together.

I love knowing that you're of Brazilian heritage. From which part of Brazil are your parents? Have you been to Brazil?

Beijos!!

Mom was from Campo Belo and dad from Rio..have only been there as a child. It was very important to my mother that we assimilate so we never spoke Portuguese in the home. 😢 I love your newsletter because I can get some of the culture I missed!
