I made your orange cake with creme fraiche and we loved it so much, but the recipe has disappeared online, only the video remains. Any chance you could post it again? The world needs that cake!

Aimee, my dear, you have no idea how happy I am to read your kind words. Thank you so much!

I gave that recipe to Dorie Greenspan and she posted on her newsletter two years ago, right after the competition, which was incredible. Here's the link for you: https://doriegreenspan.substack.com/p/the-orange-cake-that-won-the-judges-22-04-23

I'm afraid it's paywalled. Are you a subscriber of Xoxo Dorie's by any chance?

I'm so glad you like that cake! It's one of my absolute favorites, and it bring me such sweet memories. It will definitely be in my cookbook, whenever I manage to finish writing it, hahaha.

If you can't get the recipe, please message me and I'll get it for you any other way.

Thanks a million for making my recipes, being a reader, and taking the time to write me. I hope you know this means the world.

Warm hugs from Brazil,

Jaíne

I love citrus anything, so I bake cakes--mostly in loaf form--with oranges and lemons. In summer, I enjoy making Ina Garten's frozen key lime pie--so easy and delicious and best made ahead! I appreciate your travel stories and look forward to hearing more!

I love it and I will def will try this weekend! I have a question though: when doing the puree should we use the oranges without peeling it first?

Thanks!

You don't peel the oranges. The instructions say to boil the oranges briefly to reduce the pith flavor. This is common in this style of cake.

Valerie, thanks for your help here! I appreciate your input :)

Is that a style of cake you like?

Carolina, that's a great question!

You don't peel them, and that's what makes this cake so particularly moist. Just as Valerie noted on her reply, you boil them to take some of the bitterness of the rind, and to soften it as well.

Please don't ever hesitate to ask questions here. I'll do my best to read them on a timely manner.

Thanks for reading,

J

Wow! Sounds delicious and mouthwatering! I’ll definitely have to try this recipe, using a couple of our backyard’s 🍊 oranges!

How lucky you are to have backyard oranges, Miriam! This is my only request if I ever get to buy a home in CA -- that I have a citrus tree hahahah

I guess this recipe will be perfect for you, then. Let me know if you make it.

Merci,

J

Jaine-I followed your recipe exactly, but my cake came out so bitter-we had to throw it out! 😕 I used 2 navel oranges and boiled them for 30 minutes first. What went wrong?

Merci beaucoup, Jaine. It's an old tree, so doesn't produce as much as in years past, but it's still a treat to have any!
